Issued for an initial 1-year period, renewable for up to 2 additional years — 3 years total maximum. This does not lead directly to permanent residency: time on this visa counts toward the 5-year legal residency requirement, but the 3-year cap alone isn't enough on its own. After the maximum, you'd need to switch to a different permit category (an employment permit, self-employment, or another residence route) to keep accumulating toward permanent status.
