  1. Get a Portuguese NIF (tax number) — most applicants use a fiscal representative to arrange this remotely before traveling.
  2. Open a Portuguese bank account, which some consulates require before visa submission.
  3. Gather and apostille your documents — criminal record, proof of income, accommodation.
  4. Submit the visa application at the Portuguese consulate serving your home address. The D8 commonly takes 30-60 days to process; build in buffer time either side of that range, since individual consulates vary.
  5. On arrival, you'll typically need to attend an appointment with AIMA (Portugal's immigration agency) to convert the visa into a residence permit.
