Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements
What you need to qualify for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa — income, documents, and the fine print that trips people up.
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa was introduced under the 2023 Startups Law, built specifically for remote workers and freelancers working for companies outside Spain. It's more purpose-built for nomads than Portugal's dual-track system.
You need to show you work remotely for a company (or companies) based outside Spain, with employment or client relationships that predate your application by a meaningful stretch — this rule exists to prevent people from using the visa to relocate a Spanish job. Freelancers generally need multiple clients rather than a single one to qualify comfortably.
Income requirements are set relative to the Spanish minimum wage (SMI) and are meaningfully higher if you're bringing family. As of 2026, the main applicant needs roughly €2,850/month (200% of SMI, about €34,200/year) — a notably higher bar than Portugal's D8, since Spain's is a flat multiple of a higher base wage rather than a lower multiplier.
- Remote work relationship predating the application — at least 3 months of documented history with your employer or clients
- Proof of income — roughly €2,850/month as of 2026, tied to 200% of the Spanish minimum wage (SMI)
- University degree or 3+ years of relevant professional experience
- Clean criminal record, apostilled
- Private health insurance
