Thailand Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): Requirements

What you need to qualify for the Thailand Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — income, documents, and the fine print that trips people up.

Verified Aug 2026 · Thai embassy DTV financial requirements and current LTR/BOI criteria

Thailand introduced the Destination Thailand Visa in 2024, aimed specifically at remote workers and digital nomads who previously had to rely on tourist visas and visa runs. It sits alongside Thailand's separate, higher-bar Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa for wealthier or more established professionals.

The DTV is built around demonstrating remote employment or freelance work for a company outside Thailand, plus a minimum bank balance rather than an ongoing income test — a genuinely different structure from Portugal or Spain's income-threshold approach. As of 2026, that balance is 500,000 THB (roughly $14,000-15,000 USD), which most embassies want documented across 3-6 months of bank statements, not just a snapshot on application day.

The separate LTR visa has a meaningfully higher bar but offers 10-year validity (issued as two 5-year stamps) and real tax perks — worth comparing directly if your situation fits. Its "Work-from-Thailand Professional" category (the one most relevant to remote workers) requires $80,000/year in income, but specifically from an employer that's either publicly listed or privately held with 3+ years operating and $50M+ in annual revenue — a real, non-trivial employer-side bar on top of your own income.
