Jobs for English Speakers Abroad
Remote work sidesteps the local-language question almost entirely — it's worth being clear about when that's actually true and when it isn't.
If you're working remotely for a foreign employer or your own freelance clients, the local language of wherever you happen to be living is generally irrelevant to your actual job — this is one of the more underrated advantages of the remote-work-plus-nomad-visa model this whole site is built around, compared to a traditional local job search.
Where language does matter, even for remote workers, is daily life logistics — banking, healthcare, dealing with your landlord, and the visa application process itself. Several countries covered in the Logistics hub have visa processes that are navigable in English at the application stage but shift to local-language-only for renewals or in-country bureaucracy — worth checking directly for your specific destination rather than assuming English carries you through everything.
If you're specifically looking for local, in-person employment rather than remote work, that's a different and much more country-specific question — English-teaching roles (see the TEFL occupation guide) are the most consistently English-language-friendly local job category across most destinations, but general local employment in most non-English-speaking countries genuinely does require local language proficiency for anything beyond a narrow set of international-facing roles.
Don't assume a country's reputation for English proficiency among younger urban residents extends to the bureaucratic and legal processes you'll actually need to navigate — these are frequently handled in the local language regardless of how common English is in daily conversation.
