Best Countries for EU Citizens
If you're an EU citizen, the honest answer for most of Europe is that you don't need a visa at all — freedom of movement already covers it.
This is the single most important page on this site specifically for EU/EEA citizens: if you're a citizen of an EU or EEA country, you generally have the right to live and work in any other EU/EEA country under freedom of movement — you don't need Portugal's D7/D8, Spain's Digital Nomad Visa, Malta's Nomad Residence Permit, Croatia's Digital Nomad Residence Permit, Greece's or Italy's programs, or Cyprus's Digital Nomad Visa at all. Those programs exist for non-EU citizens.
This matters because a lot of nomad content doesn't make this distinction clearly, and EU citizens sometimes spend real time researching visa programs that were never relevant to their situation in the first place.
Where this changes: if you're an EU citizen looking outside the EU — Thailand, Mexico, Colombia, the UAE, and every other non-EU country on this site — the standard visa research applies to you the same way it would to anyone else, since freedom of movement obviously doesn't extend beyond the EU/EEA.
If you are an EU citizen and unsure whether this applies to your specific situation (dual citizenship, a non-EU family member joining you, or a country with its own separate rules), that's worth a direct conversation with an immigration professional rather than assuming based on this general guidance.
This is informational, not advice. Visa, tax, and immigration rules change, and a general guide can't account for your specific situation. Before you act on anything here, confirm current details with the relevant embassy, consulate, or a licensed immigration or tax professional.
