Airalo Review
The pay-as-you-go eSIM pioneer — where it's the strongest option, and where its per-GB pricing works against you.
Airalo was among the first widely-used eSIM marketplaces built specifically around short-term traveler data plans, with a large country and regional plan catalog that's generally the broadest of the three providers covered on this site.
The pricing model is per-GB tiered rather than unlimited — genuinely well-suited to shorter trips or lighter data users. Small single-country plans start around $4 for 1GB, but the cost per gigabyte drops meaningfully as the plan size increases, so a small plan bought repeatedly costs more per GB than one larger bundle up front. One real, non-obvious detail worth knowing: Airalo's plans labeled "Unlimited" aren't actually unlimited — they provide roughly 1-3GB of high-speed data per day, after which speed drops to 256kbps-1Mbps for the rest of that day. Heavy data users doing regular video calls or streaming should budget around this real cap rather than assume the word "unlimited" removes the need to think about usage.
Country coverage breadth is Airalo's clearest advantage — for less common destinations, it's often the provider most likely to have a plan available at all, where flat-rate competitors may have narrower coverage.
Best fit: shorter trips, lighter data users, or travel to less common destinations where broader country coverage matters more than unlimited data. See the full eSIM comparison for the three-way breakdown.
