Thailand Retirement Visa (O-A / O-X)

Thailand's original long-stay program for retirees predates the nomad-visa trend by decades — and has real requirements the newer DTV doesn't.

Thailand's retirement visa categories (commonly referenced as O-A and O-X) are separate from and considerably older than the Destination Thailand Visa covered in the main Thailand visa guide — this is Thailand's original long-stay visa route, built specifically for retirees rather than remote workers, and has been running in some form for decades.

The defining eligibility requirement is age: applicants generally must be 50 or older. This alone separates it from every nomad-focused visa on this site, none of which have an age floor.

Financial qualification is confirmed via three routes: an 800,000 THB deposit in a Thai bank account (seasoned for at least 2 months before a first application, 3 months for annual extensions), a monthly pension/income of at least 65,000 THB, or a combination of both totaling 800,000 THB. The O-X route (available only to nationals of 14 specific countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and most of Western Europe) requires considerably more — a 3,000,000 THB deposit, or 1,800,000 THB plus 1,200,000 THB in annual income — in exchange for up to 10 years of stay versus the O-A's 1-year renewable term.

Confirmed: the O-A and O-X routes require health insurance meeting a specific minimum — commonly cited as roughly $100,000 USD (or 3,000,000 THB) in overall coverage, broken down as at least 40,000 THB outpatient and 400,000 THB inpatient coverage per policy year. This became mandatory in October 2019 for O-A extensions, and the O-X specifically requires Thai-issued insurance — foreign policies aren't accepted, unlike the O-A which does accept certain foreign insurers approved by Thailand's Office of Insurance Commission. This is a real point of confusion for people researching Thailand generally: the DTV nomad visa carries no comparable mandatory insurance minimum.
